An Intergovernmental institution under
United Nations Treaty Series 49006 / 49007
Online (Asynchonous)
EUCLID (Euclid University) is a unique international intergovernmental organization established under United Nations Treaty Series 49006/49007, with its charter registered with the UN Secretariat. EUCLID operates as a treaty-based institution with a specialized university mandate. This status allows it to deliver higher education programs with a global, non-regional focus, emphasizing practical applications in fields like diplomacy, international affairs, and public health. Unlike traditional universities tied to national systems, EUCLID's intergovernmental framework enables direct collaboration with governments, international bodies such as the United Nations (UNFCC) and ECOWAS, and provides students with opportunities for internships and real-world engagement in global health policy.
The online PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, often abbreviated as DEPI, is one of EUCLID's flagship offerings through its Engerhardt School of Global Health and Bioethics. This fully online-delivered, non-residential program concentrates on the intersection of clinical studies, public health policies, and data-driven decision-making. It equips students with advanced skills in analyzing health data, designing clinical trials, interpreting epidemiological trends, and addressing bioethical challenges in global health contexts. The curriculum prioritizes real-world applicability over purely theoretical research, incorporating topics like health systems strengthening, tropical diseases (e.g., malaria), fraud detection in clinical trials, and managerial epidemiology—making it particularly relevant for addressing challenges in the Global South.
To date, this remains the only PhD program in epidemiology and biostatistics offered by an international intergovernmental organization, setting it apart from similar degrees at national universities or private institutions.
Prof Dr Ernst von Schwarz, one of the world’s most published cardiologists, is also also a member of our distinguished faculty group.
Epidemiology and biostatistics are often studied and approached from a national-centric perspective. Few programs are truly international in scope so as to fully prepare graduates for global civil service or corporate careers that will engage a wide variety of global health challenges, including vaccine policy HIV, drug-resistance, diet-related or lifestyle diseases, etc.
To answer this challenge, EUCLID has designed a world-class doctoral curriculum, which is presented here with full documentation of syllabus and faculty resources, as well as total tuition. This documentation will enable potential students to determine if this program is suitable and aligned with their career objectives.
This unique PhD program focuses on the practical and policy aspects of global public health rather than the advancement of purely theoretical knowledge.
This doctoral program was primarily designed to serve civil servants of EUCLID’s Participating States, but it is also open to the general public as an excellent route to pursue a career within inter-governmental bodies, NGOs and the public sector.
Thanks to its low tuition and institutional relationships, and because it covers such topics as health systems strengthening, malaria and tropical diseases in-depth, it is expected to be of special interest to Global South/African students.
